32 comments on “Not Your Typical “Sky Roar”: Strange Sound in Fort Worth

    • Heard tonight again, 4/26 regular intervals like sonic booms, jet thrusters, or pulses. (like the propane coming on in my motorhome but intesified by 100.)
They always use a cloud cover? interesting
      What is there to hide?
2 hours later the sky is clear….

  1. well it does sound like a jet engine of some sort, and if he lives near a military base it must be some sort of test…

  2. Well I live not that far from a military base and that is the exact same noise we hear here regularly, and I’m not too sure myself if it is normal or strange noise but if ur near a military base and hear the same sound that I hear near my military base then maybe it’s not strange sounds..?

  3. I heard something that sounded like a 800′ propane gas flame coming on then shutting off in about 2 or 3 seconds in january in virginia, it was near wallops but they were not launching any rockets that day. It was like nothing i’ve ever heard before. I work outside all day everyday and i have also heard something that sounds like a tractor trailer on a treadmill, i thought it may be the highway but there is absolutly no doppler effect whatsoever. it does change intensity, but not frequency.

    • Also have you seen the strange mirage hologram city thing that appeared in china? Pretty cool “phenomenon”

      • Inter dimensional crossover? or parallel universes bumping into each other. That may account for the audio and the mirages the visual. I’m talking out of my rear right now but believe these two phenomenon are due to something along these lines. I don’t know much but do know things are speeding up and these are strange days on planet Earth. Whatever it is I know everything will come out in the wash. That’s my fail safe, the faith that I am on a road (all of us) to the source. Sort of like Salmon, it’s a wild and crazy river that were on full of pitfalls and danger I just hope we make it to spawn before a Grizzly Bear eats us or some fisherman snags me and cooks me. At any rate that’s what I think. Who cares what I think! LOL!! Oh well Be Kind to others and know that somehow we are not separate but of the same……a….

  4. “Sound Guy” comments: cameras do have various features that try to isolate the sounds the camera thinks you want to hear from the background noise, sort of the way noise canceling headphones work, or the way cellphones set to speaker phone will allow your voice to pass while squashing the ambient city noise behind you. Listening to the video, the camerman bumps the camera mic at 2:36 and you can hear the ambience squash for just a brief moment. This is the mic reacting to the (it thinks) extremely loud sound it just heard, it’s trying to protect your TV speakers during playback…
Something very different starts happening at 2:50… The “roar” remains constant while the ambience seems to fade in and out before disappearing completely from 3:27-3:43. During this time you can also note a change in the roar it’s self (it INCREASES while the ambience DECREASES). It’s possible that this would happen if the roar sound were changing volume enough to trip the compressor in the camera mic the same way the bump did earlier, but it would need to be an EXTREME and SUDDEN jump in db to do this ( I cannot emphasise EXTREME and SUDDEN enough!!!). Also interesting to note that a volume jump of that magnitude should startle wildlife (and people!…think sonic boom…) yet the birds don’t seem to care when the audio returns to normal.. they’re still chirping away like nothing happened.
We would need to distinguish between a noise canceling feature (like a speaker phone) and a compression feature (like a bumped mic). I would say this is either an altered audio track, where someone has manipulated the volume/presence of two seperate layers of audio, or it’s something wrong with the camera it’s self. I don’t see how a distant sound could make the recording behave this way. Since we have other reports of the sound AND a probable source (military base) we can assume the cameraman has no reason to fake the video or alter the audio. So, I would say ignore the inconsistancies in this particular recording and focus on the sound that everyione claims to have heard.

    • Thanks for the great summery of the mechanics behind sound recording, Ryan. Very informative.

I agree totally with you about the birds (I may know absolutely nothing about sound recording, but bird behavior I know!). That was my very first thought when listening to the recording. Why are the birds still singing, and why does the singing immediately get louder (I mean, more birds and types of birds) at the very moment the sound gets quieter. I will have to listen to this one a number of times more to isolate the types and possible number of birds in the background, but honestly… They should have gone totally quiet as soon as the roar starts (or at least starts getting really loud) – unless this sound is a regular thing DURING THE DAY (which this person says was an anomaly) and they are used to it.

  5. Dude, in case this is a military test, don’t they have some noise level policy to rule this kind of anoyance? Damn, this might be a lot stressing!

I’m a drummer and a single groove on a snare drum in my neighbourhood is enough to give people a reason to call the police and complain about it.

  6. I’m on the edge of Alvarado, Texas – about 40 minutes from Ft. Worth, close to Mansfield, Burleson, Lillian, Joshua, Arlington…

We hear this sound very loud twice tonight about 10pm (March 24th 2012). The first time I heard it, I was annoyed but didn’t think much of it. Second time, it was frightening. The video at the top is EXACTLY what I heard tonight. It sounds like someone moving heavy furniture across a wooden floor, but it just seems to suck all the atmospheric noises around you right out of the sky and overwhelm you with the roar. It lasts about 30 seconds to a minute and is highly alarming to listen to.

I reasoned at first that it was the gas plant in the field near us. I thought maybe it was the trucks there filling up from the natural gas pump station, and that it was just a bit loud. We’ve heard that before. But the second time was very different. I’d never ever heard that sound before. What’s even more unsual is that I can still hear this sound but way off in the distance and it’s constant. It has yet to end. You can’t heard it on camera, as I tried recording it, but my whole family can hear it as it gets loud enough that we notice it’s back. I’m pretty realistic about explaining about stuff, but well… this one is just weird and downright frightening to hear first hand, to be honest.

What the heck is the deal? What is causing that kind of sound?

    • This is creepy. My husband woke me this morning at about 6:30am after hearing the same exact sound as the one in this video in 30-60 second intervals about 5 min. apart. We went outside and listened as it happened about five more times and slowed between intervals. There were no crafts overhead. We are right near the intercoastal in West Palm Beach FL and have never heard anything like it. At the end of each interval there was a faint clanking that sounded like metal or something. It was still happening faintly in the distance when I left for work around 8:30am. In between the time the sound was occurring, a train passed less than a mile away, planes flew over (we are a few exits from West Palm airport) and you could hear both were not as loud as this sound. The sound drowned out the train during one of its intervals!! What is it?? It’s not as alarming as the Godzilla sounding videos we’ve seen, or the horns of the apocolypse sounding videos, but just as creepy…we have never heard this before here. Several neighbors let their dogs out in the yard during the time we were listening to it and they were all barking. Our dogs also barked…but none of the neighbors seemed to notice.

      • Forgot to mention – we went back to bed and heard it at the same volume a total of about 10 times…

      • This “horn” and Godzilla types are fakes. This type isn’t. Not sure what it is. Did you come to this site looking for information about what you heard?

      • Yes – I asked my sister and brother-in-law if they heard it because they live about a mile South of us the same distance from the intracoastal…but they didn’t hear it because they were sleeping. I couldn’t find anything online yet, but I’m curious to see if it happens again tonight/tomorrow morning…I was on an adrenaline rush all morning looking for info on this because I’ve already watched all the other videos but not many are like this…why do you say the others are faked? I wouldn’t know either way, but it’s not cool to fake something like that. Ours was definitely not normal.

        Thanks!

      • Thanks and let us know. Click on the categories section “sky roars” to see many more videos like this one. The constant jet noises are very different and there are many types of sky noises some of which are hoaxes. Yes it’s VERY not cool to fake these sounds.

  7. I was reading the post about the birds and how they should have been startled or stopped singing during the roar. I’m just a regular lady here… no specialties or degrees in anything of any consequence to this topic, but I can state that if you’ve ever lived in or near a busy city or major airport, you understand that birds that are used to the loud noises around them such as cars, airplanes overhead, jets flying by, noisy trucks, etc… Given that they’d be used to the sounds, that’d also mean that they do not get startled by these sounds. I’ve even heard birds singing during thunderstorms out here. I always thought it was weird to hear them, but well – it is what it is. While my family I were listening to this noise I described in my post above, the odd part of it all was that the frogs outside still kept on croaking. We have frogs and crickets out here all chirping and singing at night time, and none of them stopped. But the sound did get loud enough that it drowned them out to where we could no longer hear them making their noise. However, when the sound instantly stopped, the frogs and crickets were still going like nothing happened. No startle, nothing. About 10 minutes later, the coyotes out in the field there started their singing and howling. I imagine that if it had been startling enough to the wildlife, they’d not even have sang tonight. It seems to me that us human folk are the only ones looking around and going, “what the heck what that???”. I can say this much – I was not the only one that heard it. I spoke to my neighbor a bit ago, as she had stepped out to let her pooch go potty, and she said she heard it too and it scared her as well. So that’s my two children, myself, and my husband, and neighbor who all heard it. Yet, coyotes, frogs, crickets, all continued their typical natural noises like no big deal.

  8. That video of the “UFO” is the kind of nensence that keeps legit reports from being investigated. It’s just a reflection. It happens again in the lower right corner immediately after the first “UFO” passes.

    • I wasn’t sure but included it because of the date and location. Sometimes I try to make connections even if there aren’t any. If is is real it’s not a ufo but some sort of military thing.

  9. There are two seperate reports on a UFO website about a triangular craft seen flying over Texas on March 23, 2012. Perhaps there is a connection….

  10. Stephanie, I’ve noticed animals getting used to “people sounds” as well. The problem I have with the birds in the video above isn’t that they kept going through the noise, it’s that ALL the background noise, including the birds, vanished but the roar remained unchanged, then the background noise with the birds FADED BACK IN. The noise didn’t abruptly stop and allow us to hear them, they faded back in, they faded very quickly, but they still faded in as if a volume level was raised. And I didn’t mean that the noise it’s self should have startled them, afterall if it’s near a military base they would be used to the sounds of people. What should have startled them was a sound loud enough to effect the camera mic in the way I was describing, which would have needed to be something like a sonic boom, not just a loud noise.
