MYSTERY SOLVED 3/21: Hail cannons…explanation here.
—————–
Here’s a weird one for ya.
Filmed in Fresno, California on March 17th, the witness says it was coming from the sky. They claim to live nowhere near a military base and said it happened all day while raining. This is definitely one of the stranger ones we’ve heard. Why isn’t this in the news!
It sounds atmospheric and distant like shots being fired. It’s not an overlay and seems interwoven with the environment and rain. What could make these booms with this rhythm for an extended period?
The fact this is happening in the rain is curious. Is this untimely beautiful weather we’re having causing these boom sounds somehow. There is some speculation the Clintonville sounds could be caused by the warm weather. The higher than normal temperatures could be causing the earth to thaw deep underground. Article here.
From the article:
“We did have some cold weather earlier in the winter, which would’ve caused ice to freeze at considerable depth,” he explained. “The warm weather could melt ice and relieve stress, causing movements and adjustments of some rock.”
That may be true for the north but would it apply in Fresno.
Here is the “twin” that isn’t quite as rhythmic. It was filmed 15 minutes north of Fresno on March 18th. Note the rain. They say they drove around looking for the source.
There is a suggestion it’s a hail cannon (see here) They’re designed to prevent hail from forming by producing an explosive shock wave. Some farmers supposedly use these and there is much evidence they do nothing.
UPDATE 3/21: Is it a pile driver?
MORE AFTER THE JUMP…
The YT poster claims it seldom hails. Anyway it’s a theory but many commenters on the video claim to have never heard it before. Does this sound the same to you? Video below.
Someone commenting on the video claimed to be hearing it as they commented on the video and they were in Hanford which is 30 miles from Fresno. This commenter no doubt was curious about the sound and went searching on the internet.

Well whatever it is, I am pretty sure that it is manmade. The trouble with many of these noises is that they are of sufficient strength to be carried long distances, and will therefore echo or reverberate everywhere – making their origin hard to place. I am sure that had it been possible to travel outside and follow the general direction the sound came from, one would eventually find the source. I should be more irritated by the nuisance than worried about it, if I heard it!
I agree, the repetition alone makes it seem manmade.
Nice post.
“Alex argues that these sounds are due to increased solar activity and resonance changes related to infrasound standing waves that we are now experiencing at an increasing rate.”

“Look Boss. De Sun! De SUn!”
No way it is a sky sound. That’s a mechanical sound..
I agree it sounds manmade it’s too repititive it doesn’t sound to me that it’s coming from the sky. But, then again we weren’t there to physically hear it. Maybe it sounds different if you’ve experienced physically. I have sisters who live in Fresno, CA they’ve not mentioned anything about strange sounds. Who knows?

I believe we can all rule out a hoax as of last year. Citing the 9/30/11 televised baseball game in Tampa, Detroit tigers vs. Tampa rays. I believe when the world puts the related pieces together it will create a mosaic of worldy porportions. This very forum, shows how tough it is to make a story stick in the world. While I’m here on this site, there are millions of others on thousands of other sites of totally different scopes and relevance. I just heard about it maybe 8 hours ago for the first time, see what I mean. I’m excited, seems to me only a global event, like this, can bring us close enough to ultimately save us from ourselves. Talk to me great universe I’ve got my ears on!
That sound is what is called a “Hail Cannon.” Farmers use these in the central valley to break up the atmosphere. Hail can be devastating to crops. I heard them that weekend. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hail_cannon
