  1. You have correctly identified fakes, and distanced yourself from them. There are also going to be sounds that have a rational explanation: I believe this is one of them.

I live in Norway, and about two or three years ago, the Norwegian Air Force kept sending up jet fighters because the Russians came near our airspace. Although I maybe only saw the jets a few times, most often I never saw them, not because of overcast skies but because the sound just went on and on… and on. Believe me, even when fighter jets are way out of sight, nature can sometimes keep their roaring going on well beyond the horizon – and it can go on for hours.

Therefore I believe that this is the explanation here. You don’t need to have any air base nearby, only airborne fighter jets somewhere in the distance. Given the right conditions, the atmosphere will not only amplify the sound in your direction, but all the individual jet roaring will be “merged” into one enormous, continuous roar.

Having listened to this with earphones, I am convinced that that is the only explanation needed for this clip. It is the same as I experienced two or three years ago.

  2. It sounds like an industrial nitrogen tank being filled. The sound is similar to a jet engine but it higher in pitch. It is extremely loud and, depending on the size of the tank, it can take 30 minutes or more to fill. The operator must wear hearing protection. The operator and I had to walk 50′ away from the tank to be able to yell loud enough to be heard by each other.

  3. If this is an industrial sound, I just hope somebody called OSHA to report the damage being done to their hearing. Geesh, that was loud.

I don’t have any suggestions to offer on the cause of this one, but I will say that if anyone has heard a chimney fire – it sounds like train is running through your house, so if it were industrial size chimneys… Perhaps it would sound something like this video.

Also, I really like how the person behind the camera gives us a full 360 degree view of his surroundings. Too many folks don’t, and it leaves me wondering what they are not showing (like the musician guy’s video).

  4. I live in Michigan City, IN and I have heard this exact sound. At first we thought it was the coal plant releasing steam from there big cooling vent but it has never ever been that loud before. It was also very late at night which seemed like a weird time for them to be doing it. It’s not the first time either we’ve heard stuff different times. Now that I know I’m not crazy I’m going to tape it the next time it happens. We thought a plane or bomb was falling it was just so loud everyone was stopping to look around.

  5. Jay Man, hi and thanks for this nice blog that gathers stuff about those “weird noises” very nicely. So yeah, i’ve been witness of a strange noise myself (but i didn’t know it was “strange” at the time lol, i just sounded really creepy to me, that’s it.)

Here’s the link to what I witnessed myself, but the video is not mine at all, the guy or woman lives kind of near of my place :
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1y9xUgItlEw (Btw it’s in Brussels, Belgium)

Also another sound was caught in Belgium :

    Notice the similarities ?

Also i got reported today by 2 friends that they also heard similar sounds in Brussels, in totally different places of the city though. One was last week, and another 2 days ago.

    Hope it helps!

    • Tbh scratch the second video, might aswell be a fake.
The first video though, is real, it’s totally what i witnessed myself.

So here it is again :

  6. Oscuro, the video claimed to be made on January 19th (I don’t mean the one from November 21 of last year), which you’ve embedded here sounds like a fake. Listen carefully and you will hear that while the window is closed, the bird song is strongly distorted. Whoever made this video manipulated the added audio of the strange sound to make it sound like it is outside, but muted when the window is closed. IMO, it’s a fail. So far as the one made by the person who lives near you, which was made last November… I can’t say much about it. Please know, I am not questioning your personal experience, just the video from the 19th of last month.

    • That’s not a problem, I didn’t pay much attention to the video itself, just it totally sounded like the sound i heard, honestly. SO i don’t know what to think now, i know what i heard is true, but if this guy faked it, then it’s kind of a “win-fake” lol.

The second video i embedded wasn’t quite in my vicinity, it was far away so i don’t dare saying it’s true. The first video though sounds totally legit to me, as it sounds totally the same thing as i heard.
      It’s weird…!

  7. I live in (West) Lafayette IN as well, and I’m actually sitting in my livingroom right now listening to that very sound. It has a definite direction, and seems to be coming from the southeast. I hear it regularly, maybe once a week or so? I’ve been hearing it for the past 8 months at least. I have no idea what it is either.

      • Hi RC. Is it coming from the sky? Could be some sort of venting in this case? I know it’s not an aircraft. Have you tried to drive to the source. Thanks for the video.

      • It very well could be venting, I suppose. I haven’t tried to locate the exact source as yet. It seems to be coming more from the horizon than from the sky. My thought is that the original Lafayette video was taken closer to the source and therefore seemed to be coming from above as opposed to my location in West Lafayette (sister city across the river).

      • If you feel like being a detective why not see if you can find the source. Might be an adventure. If you do let us know.

  9. I have lived in West Lafayette for the past 6 years and hear something like this every couple months. I actually just heard it about 5 minutes ago, and decided to do a search and stumbled upon this blog. It always sounds like a fighter jet but whenever I go outside to look, I don’t see anything, even on a clear day. I did read on wlfi.com that “According to the Grissom Air Reserve Base, there is practice area that extends from Warsaw to Delphi and also toward Kokomo and Rossville.” There could also be jets flying over from Illinois Air Guard or Michigan Air Guard… I still wish I could find more information on it though…

    • Yes these jet roaring sounds are a mystery. Sometimes they are jets but they the unexplained ones can last up to 2 hours.

  10. I have lived in either West Lafayette, or Lafayette (Down south by the Mall) for my entire life, and never once have I heard these noises, ever. The only thing out of the ordinary is that danged cornstarch smell from Staleys.
